点评:My friend and I attended a three‑hour session with Brian, which proved to be a strange experience and, on reflection, very disappointing.
I have ridden and worked around horses all my life; however, throughout the session I was treated as though I had no prior knowledge or experience. A significant proportion of the time was taken up with what felt like unnecessary delays. For example, we spent approximately 30 minutes sitting in Brian’s office discussing comparisons between Western riding and the BHS system. We were then required to collect, groom and tack up our own horses, again at a very slow pace.
Once mounted, the ridden element lasted around 45 minutes and included only one very brief trot, which fell well short of what I would reasonably expect from a three‑hour session.
On returning, Brian’s patience appeared to diminish, and his attitude towards me noticeably changed. When I swapped sides by walking under my horse’s neck (a method commonly taught within the BHS), I received a five‑minute lecture insisting I should always walk around the horse’s hindquarters, alongside comments about his liability should I be injured. In contrast, Brian remained consistently pleasant and respectful towards my friend, who I should note is male.
We proceeded to untack, wash down and turn out our own horses, assisted with turning out others, and were introduced to Brian’s fully blind stallion, which was confined to a dark stable — an experience I found concerning. When collecting our belongings, Brian delivered a further speech about women arriving “thinking they know it all”, while stating that men are always the ones who learn the most.
Overall, the session did not meet expectations in terms of content, use of time, or professional conduct. My horse was extremely sweet and one I would gladly have taken home. Nevertheless, we will not be returning.
