点评:Went on the cruise as part of the Air Rarotonga day trip package (2 adults, 3 teenagers). It's always a bit uncertain as to whether these sorts of things will live up to the promised description. In this case, it surpassed it.
First up, the Aitutki lagoon. Whatever pictures/videos you've seen do not do it justice. Honestly one of the most beautiful places I've seen (and I've travelled quite a bit). The water is crystalline, the sand pure white, the green of the trees contrast, great open skies with clouds to give depth. Snorkling at the tours designated stop was quite good and certainly fun - but then at the last stop on One Foot Island we went off by ourselves and came across a turtle, which we then spent 15 minutes swimming alongside as it cruised the channel. A life memory.
Then, the cruise itself. Although the tour was full, the boat didn't really feel crowded - lots of room to move around and relax in. They've tweaked the ratio of time on the vaka (boat) to time on shore/in the water really well. The tour guide/MC figure (Ali) is a charismatic leader of both the experience and the Aitutaki community itself - the number of locals who came up to hug and chat with him shows that he's not *just* a tourist guide and the business is real part of the place in which it sits. The boat staff unobtrusively keep everything flowing perfectly, as well as providing a live musical soundtrack which had many of us singing along with them by the end. And the lunch provided was honestly the best food we had in the Cook Islands - a perfect mix of local produce salads, fruits and BBQ'd swordfish.
Yes, it's a bit pricey to get over and do this. But it's also one of the best tourism experiences I've ever had anywhere. The fact that the Island deliberately is keeping the visitor footprint small makes this a rarity today - a near-custom designed exclusive experience that you can buy straight off the internet. All five of us from ages 15-55 unreservedly recommend.
