点评:A 90-minute guided tour of a historic subterranean complex of WWII Italian & German air-raid shelters offered by a local spelunking club (caving) group with an interest in WWII history maintains these tunnels. Tours are only available on the last Friday of the month; only 5 euros entrance fee but the tours fill up quickly so I booked this in advance. Sent them an email to reserve my spot and requested a tour in English; got a confirmation email the next day. You pay when you show up and they cross your name off the list. The entrance is a little tricky to find since it's not an "official" city museum - finally I looked more closely through a metal gate in a retaining wall and realized that was the spot. This is definitely off the beaten path, but there had to be over 50 people waiting; no Americans. It turns out there were about 12 of us for the English version. Their site recommends closed toe shoes and long-sleeves since it's cool inside...and it was. These were not cramped or low-ceiling tunnels; the floor was rocky and a bit uneven and due to water seepage, there were a few areas with puddles but the areas that were really wet were closed off. There was electricity, so it was not a creepy experience. There wasn’t a whole lot to see but the guide did a good job at providing background history; there were display cases with lots of objects so I asked if those had been found during the excavation and he explained that most had been donated by locals who were pleased to support this volunteer effort telling a key part of Trieste’s history. The volunteer guide did a good job and conveyed historical and cultural information clearly and passionately. To speak in front of groups of people in a second language about a rather esoteric topic is not easy, so definitely worth the five euros
