点评:Vicars' Close in Wells is reportedly Europe's oldest residential street with the original buildings still intact. It is a planned street from the 14th Century, with numerous Grade I listed buildings, totalling 27 residences, a chapel and library at the north end, and a hall at the south end, over an arched gate. It is connected at its southern end to Wells Cathedral by a walkway over Chain Gate.
It was deliberately built with a narrow far end to make it look longer. It is odd when one looks back at the dead end and come back down the street as it seems shorter that way.
It was interesting to walk the cobbles and see the buildings from the outside as part of our walk around Wells. Renovation work is said to be done to allow internal viewing at a later date.
A good use of a few minutes. Free entry. Good photograph opportunity spot.
