Best-kept secret in southern Fife!
Aberdour Castle and Gardens的点评
点评：Historic Environment Scotland has some little gems amongst its properties, and this is one of them, set in the beautiful coastal village of Aberdour, just along from North Queensferry. Visiting any property in mid-November, when it’s cold and pouring with rain is a challenge, but we discovered a small fortified castle set in fine gardens and grounds. There are enough rooms inside to get out of the rain for a while, bolstered by a photographic exhibition on Scottish gardens, featuring a broad range of different horticultural styles and purposes. Some of the oldest parts of the building are roofless but still in sufficient repair to get a good idea of what this place looked like during the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, aided by some excellent illustrated information panels (although we would have liked more of these) . During the growing season, the neighbouring walled garden, plantings round the castle and orchard will be a riot of colour and scent but even in mid-November there was some good structural interest and fine stonework. Do visit the very old St Fillans church next door - it is quite beautiful and a calming, warm sanctuary . Aberdour is a beautiful village with a good range of tea rooms and hotels (the Castle doesn’t have a tea room). We had a lovely lunch in the Aberdour Hotel nearby. The castle is easy to find. We parked in the adjacent station car park (but could have come by train from Edinburgh!) Nb/ plan to make either a morning or afternoon visit, as, rather quaintly, the Castle and gardens shut for lunch!
