点评:A very interesting and pleasant visit to this 17th. century red brick hall set in 90 acres of land. The building was commissioned by George Calvert, who became 1st. Lord Baltimore and founded the U.S. state of Maryland and there is still a strong connection between its people and Kiplin Hall, evidence of which is clear on the house tour. None of the rooms are particularly exceptional apart from the library, but the visit is enhanced by the volunteers in each room, who clearly have a strong attachment to the hall and are happy to share their knowledge with visitors and have a good chat.
We walked around the walled and formal gardens. In late October, inevitably, many were bare, but there was still a lovely display of numerous varieties of dahlias.
We had insufficient time to walk around the lake, instead electing to follow the Halloween trail in the wood. There were lots of displays set up by the "volunteer army" and I'm sure this trail will have been much enjoyed by young visitors.
The new cafe (converted stables and coach house), which adjoined a visitor centre and shop, provided a pleasant welcome and our snacks were tasty.
Definitely worth another visit to fill in the gaps.
