点评:Finally made it to the Carriageworks Saturday Farmers Market after years of hearing about it.
I lived in California for many years and made the weekly pilgrimage to the San Francisco Ferry Building Farmers Market on Saturdays. Whenever I’ve lamented how much I miss it, friends have always said: “You have to go to Carriageworks.” So I finally did.
First thoughts on the vendors: I’m impressed. I genuinely don’t mind paying 5x Woolworths prices for a foo-foo chicken thigh that is so organic it probably had a better childhood than I did. Likewise, the organic kale, broccoli and cauliflower were exceptionally fresh and high quality.
I bought some ready-to-cook chi-chi chicken and beef pho for nights in this week, and even managed to bring home some Country Women’s Association scones without having to trek to the Easter Show.
Was I happy with the overall experience?
No.
Why?
DOGS. Everywhere.
Who thought it was a good idea to allow dogs into an already crowded food market?
It’s busy enough with double strollers, slow walkers and groups holding extended coffee conferences in the middle of the aisle. Why should shoppers also have to negotiate people carrying, walking and managing two or three dogs while trying to buy from stalls already five-deep in people?
I like dogs. I just don’t understand why they need to come grocery shopping.
The San Francisco Ferry Building Farmers Market prohibits dogs, and frankly that makes a lot more sense in a crowded market selling fresh food.
Excellent vendors. Excellent produce. CWA scones: obviously excellent.
But as an overall market experience, it wasn’t for me.
Five stars for the food. One star for turning a farmers market into a dog park with cauliflower.
