点评:I wondered what the great Ralph Waldo Emerson loved about Montselice that made him favour it? Wandering the streets among the quiet, pale honey coloured rocks after seeing the view across the plain I knew; climbing the mount to the castle, lizards skittering up the walls in gront of capers and the odd pomegranate I knew better still. The castle is small, with an above-ground vault in which lie, almost open to us, the ancestors. The sky was azure, the Sun was warm the path was steep. This is a place I have only found in Italy: nice weatherin autumn, if not guaranteed.
It's a little gem, a silicate one as befits ìts mundane yet special poetry-of-a-name. Naipaul admired Italians for "making cheese out of dirt"; an everyday alchemy of the ordinary.
A small town, a long view and sultry weather. And unadvertised, surterranean catacombs. I topped it off with an ice-cream. La dolce vita!
