点评:At the top of the steps up to the Abbey, you initially come across St Mary's Church, an Anglican Church which is still open for worship today.
Having been founded around 1110, it is currently undergoing a major refurb to the chancel but is also fundraising to provide similar upgrading to the interior which dates back to the 18th Century.
Not the most attractive church internally but then, in the days when it was being built, fancy decor wasn't a priority. Wandering around this church gives a real indication of the hardships of following a religion in these days.
Easy to imagine a cold, sparsely decorated building, cramped uncomfortable seating and a long period of listening to the incessantly droning from the preacher.
Externally, the church graveyard has many well worn tombstones and it takes little imagination to get the feel of the dark, cold, misty night which found it being used as a setting in Bram Stokers novel, Dracula. I found it funny to see a sign on the door asking people not to ask where Druaculas Grave is - it doesn't exist.
