点评：This helicopter ride was bought for me by my husband as an anniversary present last September. The voucher was valid for 12 months, so we sensibly waited until the weather improved before booking.
Big mistake.
When we finally went to book, we discovered there were no available dates for the 6-mile helicopter ride we’d been given.
Six miles? That’s it?!
Miraculously, there were dates available if we upgraded to the 18-mile flight… for the bargain price of another £68. Funny, that. With the voucher about to expire (or, of course, we could extend it for another year for just £20), we had little choice but to pay.
During booking, we entered our weights, which is perfectly understandable for safety reasons.
The day before the flight, an email arrived telling us to check in after 6pm… except the phone lines didn’t even open until 8pm. Then came another surprise: don’t forget your £5 per person fuel surcharge, payable on arrival. Yet another fee conveniently not included in the original price.
At check-in, the lady in front of us was asked to pay an extra £30 because she’d apparently underestimated her weight by 2kg.
Seriously? That’s probably just last night’s curry waiting to make its exit.
We nervously stepped onto the scales ourselves and, thankfully, came in 1kg lighter than declared. Out of curiosity I asked whether you get a refund if you’re lighter.
You’ll be shocked to hear the answer was no.
Then the people behind us checked in… and suddenly they were joining our flight. So much for the intimate helicopter experience. Four people in total, with three seats in the back.
We’d declined the extra £30 they’d wanted to guarantee a front seat. Ironically, someone had to sit in the front because of the seating arrangement, and we were simply told to choose who it would be.
Result! My husband enjoyed the front seat for free. Sorry to everyone who paid extra…
Finally, we took off.
Nine minutes and forty-eight seconds later, we landed.
The flight departed from NG12 and flew roughly as far as Nottingham Racecourse before turning around. Having lived locally for 45 years (and with the help of Google Maps), I’d estimate the total distance at around 9 miles, not the 18 miles we’d paid an extra £68 for.
Back on the ground, the final sales pitch awaited.

* £30 for two.
* £45 for three.
