Info as of Dec 2025. The way it works is many monks walk along a route that goes up and down the streets of the old quarter. I set up at 5:30am on Sakkaline Road in front of Wat Sensoukharam to get some good shots with the bright, lit-up gold temples in the background. First monk showed up here at 6 AM when it was still dark. The scene was not as hectic as some of the other reviews stated mainly because yellow tape has been set up to hold the tourists back from the sidewalk where the monks are being given food. I stayed there and got some good shots of the monks with the wat in the background. At first it was just a few monks and thought it was disappointing. But I waited and then many more monks appeared. Then as the main group of monks moved slowly south on the street, I walked with them about half a mile down the street. It was much less crowded here, but the background wasn’t quite as good with no temple background. Anyhow,if you don’t get your desired shots at first, don’t worry - just keep following the monks and you’ll get some other shots later. I walked over to the parallel street to the north, Kounxoau Street, and I saw the monks walking up/north it to where the street and ceremony ended next to side of Wat Xiengthing. This was around 7 AM and light was out - it was well past sunrise.
Other tips: when it’s dark, make sure to turn off your flash as it is against the rules. Keep 9 feet from the monks and don’t stand in their path. Also, when it’s dark, turn off night mode on your smartphone so you don’t get blurry shots from slow shutter speeds.
