点评:Pažaislis Monastery is a real gem, and a must see for those travelling to Kaunas. They are very open about the fact that it is still a working monastery, and this must be considered when planning your visit there. Some parts are understandably in use by the church, and therefore not accessible to guests, but that absolutely doesn’t mean that there isn’t a good amount to see, and what you do see is just breathtaking!
My biggest fear when arriving was that I’d somehow be ‘in the way’ or ‘intruding’ on the monastery’s daily operations. This absolutely wasn’t the case, and whilst I was let it via the gate with an access doorbell (for want of a better word), this was more for the security of the site, rather than that guests were not frequent or expected. I headed to the information office where I bought my ticket and was given a map of the site, explaining what (and where) everything was, and what could be accessed by the public. The lady there was very helpful and told me where to start.
I’d actually recommend going to the exposition/museum exhibition first as it provides great context for the how the monastery was founded and its operations throughout the centuries. From reading previous reviews, I expected this to be a small room with maybe one or two cabinets, but found it to be a fairly extensive and modern museum over two floors (complete with learning centre and bathrooms). I found myself consuming all that was there, and really enjoying the history. Armed with my new found knowledge, I headed to the cloister, church, and other small parts of the site that guests could visit.
It was stunning, and pictures really don’t do it justice. It must be seen for yourself! I was there at least an hour and a half and was glad that I came. Essentially, it’s a site where the staff and the administration have worked incredibly hard to create a welcoming environment, and great visitor experience, in a place that is more than worth celebrating. Don’t expect big gift shops and tea rooms, that’s not the point. There are however, plenty of bathrooms, and a chance to donate for rosary beads and prayer cards in the information office. You are coming to a place of outstanding architectural (and natural) beauty, and learning about how countless people have kept it for its original purpose- a religious site.
Put Pažaislis on your list of places to visit when in Kaunas!
