点评:Beautiful Mountain, but the Gondola Management Needs Significant Improvement
Whistler is an outstanding resort destination and an excellent example of how a former Winter Olympic venue has been transformed into a world-class tourist resort. The village is beautifully planned, with excellent hotels, restaurants, and visitor facilities. It truly sets a high standard for mountain tourism.
Unfortunately, our experience with the gondola operations on Whistler Mountain was disappointing.
The management of the Peak Express chairlift was inconsistent and poorly coordinated. The Peak Express officially begins operating at 11:00 a.m., but visitors must first walk downhill along the Peak Express Traverse for about 10–15 minutes to reach the chairlift station.
What we found difficult to understand was the inconsistency in how access was managed. On foggy days, when the Half Note Trail and High Note Trail are closed, staff allow visitors to enter the Peak Express Traverse as early as 10:45 a.m. so they have enough time to walk to the chairlift and board it when it opens at 11:00. However, on the clear day we visited, when all trails were open, the entrance to the traverse was not opened until 11:02 a.m. By that time, it was already impossible for anyone to reach the chairlift in time for its advertised 11:00 opening. This was clearly not caused by the weather—it was simply inconsistent operational management.
An even greater concern was the management of the final gondola service back to the village.
According to the published schedule, the Whistler Village Gondola operates uphill until 8:00 p.m., with the final downhill service departing at 8:15 p.m. Before boarding at 7:40 p.m., we specifically asked a staff member whether we would still have enough time to return to the village, and we were told there would be no problem. We asked again at the mid-station and received the same reassurance.
However, at around 8:05 p.m., the gondola suddenly stopped and remained suspended in the air for more than 20 minutes. There were no obvious weather issues, such as strong winds, and no explanation was provided to passengers. Everyone was left wondering what had happened, and some passengers understandably became anxious, believing that the gondola might have stopped operating for the night.
When the gondola finally resumed, we did not arrive at the summit until approximately 8:45 p.m. By then, the staff were already preparing to board one of the last downhill cabins. They appeared genuinely surprised to see passengers still arriving on the uphill gondola. Had our cabin been just a few cabins farther behind, we might not have been able to return to the village that evening.
This should never happen at a world-class mountain resort. Carefully checking tickets is important, but ensuring that every guest who is allowed to board the final uphill gondola can safely return to the village should be an even higher priority.
There are also two policies that could be improved.
First, during the peak summer season in mid-July, the Whistler Village Gondola opens at 9:30 a.m., while the Peak Express does not begin operating until 11:00 a.m., regardless of weather conditions. This schedule significantly limits the amount of time available for day-ticket visitors to explore Whistler’s main alpine attractions and trails.
Second, the ticket office does not accept cash payments. While many travelers use credit cards, some international visitors—particularly elderly travelers—may rely on cash or may not carry a physical credit card. Providing at least one alternative payment option would make the experience more inclusive and visitor-friendly.
Whistler itself is a spectacular destination and absolutely worth visiting. However, the mountain’s operational management, communication with guests, and end-of-day safety procedures should better reflect the standards expected of one of Canada’s premier mountain resorts.
