点评:A firm highlight of being in Sousse is stepping inside the full force interior world of Taieb Ben Hadj Ahmed 🙌🏼
I wasn’t prepared. No restraint, no editing, no hierarchy, just an all consuming accumulation.
Artwork, objects, textures, histories… layered, stacked, relentless.
Everywhere you look- something.
Everywhere you turn- more.
It’s excess as language. A total saturation of vision.
And not just artwork… tortoises wondering through, kittens threading the space, herbs, flowers, and plants growing throughout, the scent of fresh home cooking weaving through it all. The house is alive in every sense, pulsing and fragrant.
I was particularly struck by the series of black, rubber coated, mutilated female figures- Les Femmes Noires. Confronting, unresolved, carrying the weight of a dark and difficult history. They sit in the body long after you’ve moved on. Not decorative. Not easy. But Necessary.
Shelby the artist’s nephew, guided us through. One of those rare, incandescent humans. When my Phoenix’s belly turned, she was immediately settled, a hot cup of vervain, fennel and fresh mint pressed into her hands. Care as instinct.
Even Maxi- usually deep in teenage resistance- stopped. Fully locked in. No eye rolls, no detachment. Just awe.
It felt like stepping inside a mind that makes no concessions. Raw. Unfiltered. Unrelenting.
We didn’t want to leave.
Unforgettable. Not in a passive way, in a way that rearranges something.
