Cascade Pass的点评
点评：This is the shorter version of a longer hike that extends to Sahale Glacier. You travel a long gravel road to get to this trailhead. Don't let that deter you though. It is a good gravel road that you can travel 30 mph on most of the way. The parking lot fills up by 7-8am. After that, people line up on the shoulder, which probably isn't great, but there is a lot of shoulder parking should you need it.
If your plan is to just hike to the Pass, you are making a mistake. This is a beautiful hike with beautiful views, but it would be such a waste not to go all the way. The start of this hike is seemingly endless switchbacks, which I just don't enjoy. Most of the Cascade Pass hike, in fact, is this series of switchbacks. The views that follow are great, but I don't like hikes that are just trudging along to get to one grand view. The Pass view is just the start.
After the Pass, you see so much more wildlife (mountain goats, marmots, pika) plus varied and dramatic views of peaks, valleys, and glacier. THIS is what makes those monotonous switchbacks worth it. Just be sure to plan this as an all day hike. The footing is often rocky, steep, or uneven, making the pace slow going. It took me 7-8 hours to do the full thing, which makes it feel like a 15 mile hike as opposed to the 11 and change. If all you want is the view of the Pass, I'd recommend just going to the Diablo Lake or Washington Pass Overlooks which have a nearly as beautiful view with zero effort (or switchbacks). The full Sahale hike is a full 5/5, just the Pass is a 3/5. I'll average this out at 4.
