点评:I hadn't planned to stop at this museum, but I'm sure glad that I did! The building itself is something to marvel at. I can't believe how far post offices have fallen as compared to this architectural gem. Granted, this building was meant to mirror the style and stature of Union Station, so I'm keenly aware that not every post office will have this level of opulence. That said, the post offices in my neighborhood are dimly lit, filthy, unwelcoming places with mostly disgruntled workers. Anyway, back to this outstanding museum. You can spend an entire day here exploring the origins of the mail system, learning about technogical advances, tracing the logistics of mail routes, visit collections of globally issued stamps, start your own stamp collection, write yourself or a loved one a postcard and have it mailed from the in-house post office. There's so much to do, see and learn. Don't miss the small details such as the tiles designed to look like letters with a postage stamp in the corner, the sheet metal stamps above the escalators and of course the stained glass windows. After this visit, I definitely have a renewed appreciation for postal workers. I can't wait to come back to DC to visit this museum again.
