点评：Your admission price includes three parts of the experience: the Presidential Library and Museum, the guided tour of the house where Woodrow Wilson was born, and the gift shop where you purchase your tickets. Plan on spending about two hours if you want to enjoy everything without rushing.
My biggest recommendation is to plan your visit around the guided house tour, since those are offered at scheduled times rather than continuously. Check the website or call ahead so you know the tour schedule before you arrive. It doesn't matter whether you do the house tour or the museum first—just plan your visit so you're ready for the house tour whenever it's scheduled, and spend the rest of your time exploring the museum at your own pace. Our house tour guide was knowledgeable, engaging, and happy to answer questions. Although Wilson lived here for only about the first 18 months of his life before the family moved to Georgia, the home provides an interesting glimpse into his family's early years. The tour includes the basement, main floor, and upstairs.
After the house tour, spend some time in the Presidential Library and Museum, which does an excellent job walking you through Wilson's life—from his parents and childhood to his presidency. One of the first interesting facts I learned was that "Woodrow" was actually his middle name (his mother's maiden name); his first name was Thomas. I also didn't realize he struggled to read as a child, likely due to dyslexia, before becoming an avid reader, scholar, and prolific author. The museum also explains how Wilson's childhood experiences during the Civil War, including seeing wounded soldiers, may have helped shape his views on war later in life.
The museum displays several of the books Wilson wrote, along with personal items such as his desk and study lamp. Don't miss the basement, where you can walk through a recreated World War I trench—it gives you a small sense of what soldiers experienced and adds another dimension to the exhibits. The museum also features Wilson's Pierce-Arrow automobile and a collection of clothing from the era. I also appreciated that the museum presents both Wilson's accomplishments and some of the more controversial aspects of his legacy, allowing visitors to gain a fuller historical perspective.
One interesting historical detail I learned was that Staunton's railroad connections allowed the family to enjoy fresh seafood, including oysters, despite being inland. As you leave town, you'll notice the railroad that helped make that possible.
Be sure to browse the gift shop before you leave—it has a nice selection of books and souvenirs. Restrooms are available in both the museum and the gift shop.
My only suggestion would be to add a short 10- to 15-minute introductory film to provide visitors with an overview before they begin exploring. I think it would make an already excellent experience even better.
Overall, this was a very enjoyable visit and a perfect way to break up a long drive through the Shenandoah Valley. If you're traveling through the area, it's a worthwhile stop.
