点评:On the recommendation- almost insistence- of a tour guide at Winchester Cathedral, I did the walk to the Hospital of St Cross. Reaching this medieval almshouse took about 20 minutes, and I learned later that this walk was similar to the walks Keats did during his stay in the city when he wrote his ode 'To Autumn' in the early nineteenth century. I initially winced at the £7.50 admission fee but the spectacular church and peaceful Master's Garden make it excellent value. The porter kindly granted my request for 'wayfarer's dole' and provided me with a piece of bread and a little ale - an almost century old tradition. A truly fascinating and remarkable place and the laminated A3 information sheet provided by the porter contained clear, interesting details about key aspects to look out for. And for the weary travellers, there's a handy bus stop around the corner that goes close to the train station!
