点评:This ancient complex (from 1132) is one of England’s oldest continuing Almshouses. They do offer guided tours by the Brothers and are open 9:30-5:00 most days. Winter hours are a little shorter. There is a tea room on site. In addition to the beautiful chapel, there is a medieval hall, wonderful gardens and a Porters Lodge. The Hospital has places for twenty five Brothers in total, each of whom is allocated his own self-contained flat and assigned to one of two separate ancient charitable foundations, either The Order of the Hospital of St Cross (The Black Brothers), or The Order of Noble Poverty (The Red Brothers). They serve visitors with a famous tradition: the Wayfarer's Dole, offering a free horn of beer and a piece of bread from the Porter's Lodge as you leave, continuing a medieval practice for travelers. It is located about a mile from central Winchester. We walked through the water meadow, which was a lovely walk. You can also use a taxi or bus to get there.
