点评:This is a gem of a small museum. It's free to get in so honestly I didn't have high expectations, but I came away really impressed. We were a varied group including a knowledge thirsty and knowledgeable adult fossil enthusiast, plus a two year old and a six year old. The displays were modern and up to date with plenty of info for people who like facts but not overwhelming if you're a casual visitor. I came away feeling I had a better understanding of the local area and would like to go back when not supervising children to learn more. Also the only indoor museum I've been to with its own bee colony! I also quite enjoyed the old style Victorian (?) curator's study. There was an interesting temporary exhibition on about the river which included some RSC costumes - awesome to see them up close.
The interactive exhibits and activities for children were great, pitched well for a range of ages and abilities to all be able to get properly involved. Two year old loved dressing up and small toy area, six year old loved the beehive and the archaeological dig tablet activity. It was really nice to see a very friendly museum volunteer walking round, chatting to visitors and making sure the activities were tidy and ready for the next visitors.
We stayed at the museum cafe for our lunch and had sensibly priced and tasty toasties. They also do a kids sandwich and drink option. We didn't have dessert but the cakes looked delicious too.
We'll definitely be back next time we're in the area.
