点评:This trek turned out to be not as difficult as I thought it would be. From looking at the timestamps on my photos, it took from 1.45pm just after the car park until 2.25pm when I reached the viewpoint. It still has some steep sections but should be doable for most. When I set off it was dry overhead, but the underfoot conditions were wet as it had rained earlier. This didn’t make it trickier though and it was a decent walk. Steady, manageable, and never overwhelming, even though I was only wearing trainers.
The Old Man of Storr is one of those places that feels less like a hike and more like stepping into a myth. From the moment I arrived at the trail car park, the clouds were hanging low over the pinnacles, drifting quickly and giving the whole landscape a mystical, otherworldly feel.
As I approached the Old Man, I slowed down to take it all in, stopping for photos and videos. The wind was strong at this point, and I was almost inside the clouds as they moved across the rock formations. By the time I reached the viewpoint past the Old Man, the rain had started and visibility dropped until the pinnacle wasn’t really visible at all.
The descent was wild. I got absolutely soaked as I had no waterproofs and the rain was hitting my face so hard it felt like being tattooed. I had no other choice but to embrace it.
Back at the car park I threw my soaking jacket in the boot of the car, went inside and blasted the heating, steamed up the windows, and sat for a few minutes. Tired, drenched, completely exhilarated and smiling at what had just happened.
This was a trek that will stay with me. Not for the difficulty but for the atmospheric vibe.
