点评:As a big fan of Hardy's work, I was keen to visit his birthplace. It is necessary to book a timeslot for a guided tour, and if you are booked on the 11.00 tour, for example, you are asked to arrive at 10.50. Please note that on top of this you have to factor in the walk to the cottage from the entrance. The NT website is not very clear and seems to be solely aimed at drivers. Perhaps it is well signposted from the car park, but I was dropped off by a taxi and had no idea where to go. I was faced with a sign saying "Welcome to Hardy's Birthplace" and a sign pointing off to the car park on the right, but actually the cottage is down an un-signposted lane straight ahead. The "visitor centre" is really just a cafe and shop - there isn't a reception desk or anyone to ask. Eventually, at the far side of the building, through a separate entrance near the toilets, I came across a map showing the various routes to the cottage and discovered that it was at least a 15 minute walk so immediately had to start powering up the gravelly inclined lane in the blazing heat in order to get there in time for my slot. Why on earth isn't there a map next to the welcome sign, or at least near the main entrance to the cafe instead of being tucked round the corner? The NT website also mentions picking up a leaflet with a map on, but there are no leaflets - you are told to take a photo of the map if you want to refer to it later.
All this did make quite a stressful start to the visit, but the guide, Linda, was excellent and very informative. Considering that the house is very small and doesn't contain any original Hardy artefacts, it is very atmospheric and was wonderful to see. The guide's talk lasted about 45 minutes and then we were able to look around the upstairs rooms on our own and also spend time in the garden. I was there about an hour altogether.
