点评:You don't have to be a Hardy fan to enjoy this idyllic cottage, reached by a gentle walk through woods (which, with a cafe, visitor centre and the car parking are part of a country park run by Dorset Council, a very happy arrangement). You have to book in advance because a volunteer guide takes you round the cottage and garden in a group of 8 or so. Our guide, Andrew, was exceptional - such a well judged talk, covering how Hardy's childhood here influenced his writing, as well as rural life in Dorset. He covered so much so naturally - everything important but also details such as the very rare moss on the thatch, plants Hardy would have known, and his life after he built the nearby Max Gate (also NT). It was a gentle visit, with minimal labelling and info panels, so that the magic of the place really seeps into your bones.
