点评:The 1000 year old Dunster Castle is the main sight in this very charming, historic village. It has a commanding position on the hill looking down over the town - we could see it from the A39 before we even arrived in Dunster.
The original wooden fortress was built by William de Moyon, the first feudal baron of Dunster in the 11th century. Not surprisingly, there’s not a lot of this left. Only the massive gateway at the lower level remains from this early period.
Over the centuries, the fortress was transformed into a palatial home and this is what you see here today.
Having explored the village, we walked uphill to the castle, thinking we’d be able to have a quick look from the outside. However it’s set way back at the end of a long drive and you can’t really see anything of the castle at all without paying to go in. It was £18pp which is fine if you have the time to enjoy it but it’s a lot if like us, you can only manage a quick visit. I think we would have needed at least a couple of hours which we didn’t have. Reluctantly, we decided not to go through.
We were still able to walk around the stables (they are free and are just to the right of the ticket office).
This was very quick and was kind of interesting (much more interesting if you have a connection with horses).
The stables date from the mid 17th century and are some of the oldest still-existing stables in England. With two levels (horses on the ground level and hay storage and living quarters up above), these were grand quarters. They belong to a time when owning a grand stable full of fine horses was a display of wealth and power. The hay mangers run along the walls behind wooden bars and the flooring is made of flat local cobblestones. Even the stalls dividers have ornately turned wooden posts.
If you’re planning on visiting the castle, allow a few hours to see everything and make it worthwhile.
