点评:My one and only visit - until today - was when the diplodocus (Dippy) was on its tour round the UK, starting with Dorchester. Soon after that the museum was closed for revamping, then came the pandemic, so it was closed for longer than anticipated. It has now been open for a while, although it will be closed again next January for the month and the exhibition hall that housed "Dippy" will be closed for most of 2026. However, the revamping is brilliant. It was a complete rethink of the building which has worked. On walking in I was reminded of museums in Germany, where they care for their heritage, unlike the UK.
The history of Dorset and in particular Dorchester is well covered, from pre-historic time through the Roman occupation to the present day with exhibits from the excavations of the Relief Road to Weymouth pushed through for the 2012 Olympics.
No self-respecting museum can get away without a café or restaurant and again, this had been well thought through. We had good coffee and sausage rolls that have a very high meat to pastry ratio and a hint of pepper - a real sausage roll. I believe that they serve lunches, but we left before service started.
Go!
