Northampton Museum & Art Gallery的点评
点评：We visited this super museum today as part of a day trip to 78 Derngate (the Rennie-Mackintosh designed house, nearby). The museum had looked a good bet for a visit online but the actual place is much better than that. There is a shoe museum on the lower ground floor (lift in the building so should be accessible). This is set out beautifully with explanatory boards which explain the displays but don't overface the reader with too much information.
There are two art galleries on the first floor with a different "twist" which take themes in art - materials, the vanishing point etc - explain what they mean and illustrate the point with actual art works. I found this a really nice take on looking, rather than simply being a space to hang beautiful artworks.
The history of Northampton is on the second floor and is really well presented (except that Gallery 1 starts in the Middle Ages until you realise you need to go to the end to start the time journey).
There is a nice cafe on the ground floor and a shop. The space is gorgeous with views of the original building melding with the new glass extension. When we visited there was an exhibition on the ground floor entitled "I grew up in the 80s), with music and popular goods from that era. It is disconcerting to find music you own in a museum display!
The museum is accessible and light and airy. There is much to see without feeling like you have to do and exam afterwards! I would certainly recommend a visit for people of all ages.
