点评:We visited Chalice Well and Gardens yesterday as a family. We live within walking distance and thought it would be a lovely place to take a picnic during the summer holidays.
What I don't understand is why children are allowed in and families are charged admission when it feels like they aren't actually welcome.
When we arrived, we were told at the entrance that children needed to be quiet while walking around the gardens. That was absolutely fine, and our children were brilliant. They walked quietly around the gardens, respected the peaceful atmosphere, ate their lunch calmly in the main meadow area and paddled quietly in the stream.
After lunch they naturally became a little restless, so I suggested they quietly run to the top of the hill and back. There was nobody else in that part of the meadow apart from one couple sitting on a bench some distance away. Within moments, a member of staff came over and asked me to stop them running because "it isn't a playground" and it's "a place where people come for quiet and reflection."
I completely appreciate that Chalice Well is a place of peace and contemplation, and we were making every effort to respect that. But children are children—they have energy, especially during the school holidays. They weren't shouting, screaming, climbing on anything or disturbing other visitors. They were simply running quietly across an open grassy area.
If the expectation is that children should remain completely still for the duration of their visit, then perhaps the gardens should be adults only. As it stands, it feels unfair to invite families in, charge full admission, and then make them feel unwelcome for normal, respectful childhood behaviour.
It's a beautiful place, but sadly we left feeling that families with children aren't genuinely welcome, despite being encouraged to visit.
