点评:We found some free street parking nearby and our first look at the castle was from a beach where I got stuck in the mud. Ruined trainers did not bode well for the visit however that was thankfully the worst over.
Well apart from taking our lives into our hands walking through / under the castle walls using, what we later realised, was a non pedestrian route!
As English Heritage members the castle was free to visit, and it’s an impressive lump (the phase my boyfriend uses when it’s more than just a ruined few walls). The sheer number of towers to climb is enough to fulfil any Rapunzel dreams.
The views over the water, the multiple river crossings are all fantastic but made better in the sunshine.
We thought about walking the rest of the town walls after, but found a fair stretch of these to be closed at the moment. So simply sat and had ice cream down by the harbour.
