点评:On a recent visit to Dordrecht, we drove across to Arnhem one Sunday to visit the Airborne Museum. The Hartenstein contains immensely detailed accounts of the participants and many, many artefacts pertaining to the battle. However, the museum is set over several floors and the flow felt a little disjointed. We were highly impressed with the exhibition dedicated to the people of Oosterbeek and Arnhem who were terribly persecuted after Market Garden and suffered throughout the winter and following spring. We were equally impressed with the new exhibition dedicated to General Stanisław Sosabowski, the courageous Polish commander who warned of the possible failure of Market Garden but, though he displayed tactical brilliance and courage, was later unjustly blamed for the operation’s failure, an accusation that would long overshadow his legacy.
On a personal note, it was interesting to see Inverness man Lt. Col. Charles Mackenzie of the Cameron Highlanders, and chief of staff to Maj. Gen. Urquhart, seated at the tableau display.
The basement seeks to re-create the advance of troops from glider to battle and does indeed manage to evoke a feeling of what it may have been like on the ground. The most chilling sensation is created by the apparently random zing of bullets as you progress.
We were disappointed that the café was not open, but we did manage to get some welcome light refreshments at the outside van on the terrace.
The price of admission included a visit to Airborne at the Bridge, a small modern building overlooking the replacement John Frost Bridge in Arnhem. Parking was easy nearby, and though it was nice to see where the action took place, there is nothing original that remains nearby, and the museum was easily visited in 15 minutes.
If you are in the Netherlands, then try to put the Airborne Museum on your itinerary. It is highly recommended and well worth a visit.
