Standing on Queen Elizabeth II Island in Lake Burley Griffin, it is not only a striking architectural feature, but also one of Australia’s largest musical instruments.
I visited on a beautiful day, and the view across the lake, the green lawns, the trees and the Canberra skyline was peaceful and very photogenic. The tower itself has a strong, modern design and looks especially dramatic against the blue sky and clouds.
What makes this place special is the sound of the bells. The Carillon has 57 bronze bells, and the chimes can be heard across the lake. It was a gift from Britain to mark Canberra’s 50th anniversary, and it still feels like an important part of the city’s identity.
It is also a lovely place for a walk, photos, or a quiet moment near the water. You can enjoy the Carillon from the island itself, from Kings Park, or from other viewpoints around Lake Burley Griffin. If you visit on Sunday, there are often free recitals from 11 am to 12 pm, which makes the experience even more memorable.
