点评:I Enjoyed a beautiful leisurely tasting room with lots of very smooth single malt Whiskeys in the warehouse district in Portland.
My wife (the non whiskey drinker) enjoyed a flight of cocktails which was quite good. This flight is unique for a distillery and made the visit equally enjoyable for both of us. So this is a great tasting location for a group where everyone doesn’t like their whiskey straight up. The cocktails were excellent.
The not so good: with only 4 or 5 people in the tasting room, I was surprised at how unhelpful the first server was. ( we did make a reservation before arriving). We each ordered a flight and were given cards to describe what we were drinking. At $35 per flight, this was shockingly poor service. After about 40 minutes a second server who has much better knowledge of whiskey arrived, and was able to show us some whiskeys that made more sense for someone who enjoys their spirits neat. He turned things around.
Generally, what their whiskeys had in smoothness, they lacked in flavor and complexity. My wife tried a few sips and enjoyed several of them….so the flight I purchased was a great tasting for beginners, which I am not.
At around $100 for most of the bottles we tasted, I thought that generally bottles were overpriced compared to their single malt competitors in Scotland. (Several of them were quite similar to a Glenmorangie 12 year which goes for $60 or so).
I ended up tasting 8 or 9 whiskeys. (Standard flight was 5 tastes. They gave me a few extra pours when they figured out what I enjoyed) I purchased a bottle for a friend as a gift. His favorite whiskey retails for about $90. The Westward that was similar cost $99. I purchased a second that had more complexity than the rest mostly because it was a distillery exclusive and it had some complexity behind it. I will give it to a friend who collects those. Cost was about $114. These really did make great gifts and I am happy to support a relatively new American single malt distiller.
Let me finish on sone positive notes. I did end up joining their whiskey club. I’ll probably give most of the bottles away as gifts, as I can’t imagine anyone objecting to the smooth charactistics. Other than my thought of the pricing being non-competitive, all were enjoyable. Specifically, I thought their PX Sherry was excellent - I always lean to Speyside in my Scotch.
In addition, by joining the club and buying a few bottles along with some other gifts, Westward waived our tasting fees. That is the way it should be done. You get a sense that the Westward team knows what they are doing
