点评:The Pearse Museum in Rathfarnham was an unexpected gem. As we had understood it was simply a school, we hadn't realised it was also Padraig Pearse's home. That discovery completely blew us away.
Having grown up in Ireland, Padraig Pearse's final days have always been part of the history we learned in school. Visiting the museum brought those lessons to life as it tells the story of Pearse's entire life rather than focusing solely on the events of the Easter Rising.
The school itself is fascinating, but so too are the beautiful living quarters. We particularly enjoyed learning about Pearse's educational philosophy. His belief in teaching through exploration and his rejection of corporal punishment were remarkably progressive for the time and showed just how forward-thinking he was.
The building extends over several floors, and we were stunned by the spectacular views from the upper levels. Our guide, Alan Phelan (if I have his name correctly) was outstanding. His passion for Padraig Pearse was contagious and he made it feel as though we had stepped into Pearse's world rather than simply walking through a museum.
The gardens were also impressive with many interesting features. We especially loved the fountain surrounded by flags, where the words of Pearse's poem "The Wayfarer" are engraved in stone. Beyond the gardens lies a wonderful park filled with around ten fascinating follies to discover adding yet another layer to what is already a remarkable place to explore.
The Pearse Museum far exceeded our expectations and is somewhere we would highly recommend to anyone with an interest in Irish history, education, architecture, or simply beautiful surroundings. It is a place that surprised us at every turn and to anyone visiting Dublin, we would say that in our opinion this place should be on every "not-to-be-missed" list.
