点评:Bilbao is a fun city to visit, but it’s also an example of what good civic planning can do and how quickly it can prove successful.
Bilbao exists primarily because of the river and its location as a port. Over time, it developed a steel industry, now largely gone, but even that depended on the river. Thus, although the town is several miles from the Atlantic, it has been a maritime city.
The Itsasmuseum (Maritime Museum) traces that history. The building itself is at the western end of the large park that runs along the Nervion River. The Guggenheim is at the opposite end – it’s an easy 15-minute walk between the two along the river. The museum itself, oddly enough, is tucked under a large ramp along the water. It is deceptively large.
The museum is on two levels and has many boats and models of much larger ships. It is organized very roughly chronologically. As you walk around, you see how the shipping business grew over the course of several centuries.
One highlight is an installation created by art professor Esther Pizarro about the city’s history. It is a very large model of the city lit from within. The excellent video (subtitled in English) points out where the city started and how it grew. The city declined substantially in the 1970s and 1980s due to the deteriorating steel industry, and a flood destroyed much of the town in 1987. This display shows how they turned that disaster into a successful urban revitalization plan, making Bilbao an exciting place to visit today.
Overall, this is a good museum to poke around. There are interesting displays with generally good descriptions. It's easy to move on if something is less engaging for you.
Be sure to walk around the dry dock just outside the museum for boats and other nautical equipment.
