Excellent outing to Vindolanda

点评：I took 2 of our adult children on an outing to Newcastle, and then the Hadrian Wall experience. We used to live in Rome for a year, so we wanted to see some of the best Roman ruins in England. We rented a car from Newcastle train station (very easy experience), and then started off at Vindolanda, and it was excellent. Very glad we took the time to see the old Roman fort ruins, and do the free guided tour. The tour guide (Annette) was excellent. Very fun, humorous, but incredibly knowledgeable. The volunteer tour guides, if Annette is any indication, are amazing. Definitely worth planning your visit around one of the free guided tours - the times are posted on the website, so be sure to check on that. I thought it was best to do the guided tour first, then do the museum, and that turned out to be best. You get more insight from the museum after you have been on the tour. Thank you Annette and Vindolanda, for an incredible visit and education. Then we drove down the road a little ways to Mile Castle Inn, for a bite of lunch, and visited the wall at Milecastle 42. Excellent end to our Hadrian Wall day. The pub is super cozy (and old), and the quarry and wall segment at 42 was worthy. We didn't have time to do a long hike, but this was a good stop, and the kids loved it. Very photo worthy as well.
