点评:We have stayed at Leeds Castle in their B&B accommodation a few times and it's always a wonderful experience.
This year we again timed this to coincide with their Christmas overlay and their night-time Illuminations, as this proved to be a good idea on a previous visit.
It is worth noting that the illuminations are charged separately and not included with daytime castle admission (and vice versa.) The extra price is competitive compared to other similar events though.
I'll break down the experience - which was almost entirely positive - into the relevant different component parts. Castle daytime, illuminations and B&B.
The Castle itself is always majestic, being a "proper" moated castle of the sort you imagine in childhood from storybooks. The current theming and displays play up the early 20th century history of the property but doesn't neglect its earlier legacy too. They are always brave in the comprehensive level to which their Christmas overlay is allowed to take over the rooms inside, to a degree I think the National Trust would shy away from. This is all for the good as there's so much lovely detail to explore in the way the rooms have been set up. (If you are coming for the first time AND your main interest is the property's internal contents, perhaps the Christmas season is not for you, but it was lovely from our perspective.) All Castle staff and guides were friendly and welcoming - even those stationed outside who must have been feeling the cold!
This year's theme was "Neverland" (and it was great to see that they were supporting/fundraising for Great Ormond Street Hospital alongside this, in keeping with the spirit of JM Barrie's original donation of the rights to "Peter Pan".) As in previous years there were actors inside the castle playing roles from the book. We met Captain Hook, Tinkerbell and Peter Pan himself. As an adult couple who were walking through the castle on our own, not with a group of children, we were pleased that the actors were allowed to ad lib appropriately around their characters, not being forced to stick to a script that might be rendered irrelevant with no children present. ("Hello girls and boys..." etc falls dead if it's just two grown-ups present.) They DID stay in character - and were witty and fun - but weren't needlessly childish. The castle's Christmas decorations were beautiful, with gorgeous trees in almost every room!
The grounds by daytime are always well worth exploring, even without the illuminations, and it was nice that the "festival" area (with the street food stalls and fairground rides) was open during the day too. The usual refreshment areas and restaurant were open too and were busy but not overrun. It was also our first visit since the pavilion was restored and reopened as a second-hand bookshop, which was nice to see and well worth visiting.
Since we were staying overnight, we didn't have to worry about booking separate car parking as we were parked onsite already. There was access from the accommodation/main castle into the illuminations at the halfway point ( we still had to show our tickets.) The lights and music were very well themed, with none of the sounds overlapping or clashing and lots of different effects including real fire and water fountain shows too - and even Father Christmas in person meeting and greeting by his cabin! A couple of areas got busy with people wanting photos with the light tunnels behind them - and who wouldn't want this, as this is one of the headline "selfie" images of all illumination events - but no area felt overcrowded and with a little patience everyone was able to get what they wanted.
The festival rides/food area was open at night, of course, and although busy was not overwhelming and, although expensive was also comparable in price to other equivalent events, so this seemed fair. It was also VERY nice to see not just one but a proper variety of gluten free options, with at least three of the different food stalls having something available, which gave my wife a nice choice instead of the usual "there's just this one thing" or worse. For reference, crumble and custard in a cup was £9, hog roast in a bap with a cup of roast potatoes was £13.50.
Marshmallows for toasting - a big trend and I suspect great profit generator - were £6 (down from £7 earlier in the season, perhaps after pushback in other, earlier reviews.) We avoided these as this - despite again being equivalent to the same thing elsewhere - just feels like poor value. (To be clear, it's poor value everywhere else too. It just strikes me as a really easy profit driver/cash-in that stands out as a recent bad trend at winter events.)
Being able to stay at the Castle remains for us one of the best value short breaks we've found. Once you factor in two days access to the castle and grounds (including the precious "out of hours" times when the public have gone home), the included breakfast, the forward parking right next to the castle (instead of walking from the other side of the grounds) AND the great room, it's amazing value. The rooms are lovely, well fitted out and (importantly at this time of year) so warm that my glasses misted up when we came in from outdoors! For the first time (perhaps due to the proximity of the Father Christmas visit room and/or the education room) we did find that our sleep was disturbed about 7am by particularly noisy housekeeping staff allowing doors downstairs/in the courtyard to slam and using vacuum cleaners at that early time as well. This has not happened before so might be a one-off or an emergency. You can't help the noise a hoover makes if someone's spilled something, but you can at least hold a door to make it close quietly if you know it slams loudly and people are sleeping nearby.
Breakfast was lovely too - and again it was good to have GF options available - and we were able to enjoy the grounds and castle for a second day before we left.
Leeds Castle is somewhere we often recommend to those looking for a day or two away as it's such a great experience.
