点评：My wife and I had the profound pleasure of visiting English Heritage’s Portchester Castle today, and it proved to be a genuinely captivating experience.
While the remarkably preserved ruins are a spectacle in their own right, the absolute highlight of our visit was a volunteer named Bob. We spent over an hour in his company as he guided us around the entire site. Bob’s knowledge is staggering; he recounted countless tales that entertained and informed us about virtually every aspect of the property. For instance, he brought to life the history of Henry VIII’s kitchens—a detail of particular personal interest, as the King visited there with my second cousin (many times removed), Anne Boleyn. Bob was truly awesome and provided an experience far superior to any standard audio tour.
For those planning a visit, here are a few practical highlights:
Accessibility: The ground-level property is very easy to navigate, even for those with mobility issues, featuring flat grassed areas and level pathways.
Parking: There is a very convenient car park right outside the entrance, which is pleasingly free for English Heritage members.
The Great Tower: For those able to manage it, I highly recommend climbing the 153 steps to the top of the tower. It is a sobering and fascinating ascent where you learn about the 1,000 Napoleonic prisoners of war once held there. You can even view the incredible theatre where 300 prisoners at a time would stand crammed into a tiny room to watch shows.
A superb day out made infinitely better by outstanding staff. Thank you, Bob, and thank you, English Heritage!
