Shame about some of the staff - one bad apple spoils the pie

点评：What should have been a relaxing visit became an exercise in the triumph of petty rule enforcement over common sense.
In 28°C heat, we were sitting quietly in the shade with our dog lying calmly beside us when a National Trust volunteer decided the pressing issue of the day was that our dog was approximately one metre too far onto a patch of grass. We were instructed to move onto the gravel because “dogs aren’t allowed on formal gardens.”
Apparently, a calm dog lying in the shade posed a greater threat than the scorching weather. Never mind that several other members of staff had already walked past without saying a word, presumably recognising that a little discretion and compassion go a long way. This volunteer clearly felt it was essential to make an example of us.
The absurdity wasn’t lost on us. We weren’t having a picnic, letting our dog run loose or damaging anything. We were simply trying to keep our dog cool while resting in the shade. Someone sitting next to us was breastfeeding, highlighting that this was simply a place where visitors were stopping to rest.
We’re staying in holiday accommodation, so “just leave the dog at home” isn’t exactly an option. We choose dog-friendly National Trust places because we expect to be treated with a bit of understanding, not as though we’ve committed some terrible offence by allowing a tired dog to lie quietly in the shade.
It’s disappointing when an organisation that promotes enjoyment of the outdoors ends up being represented by someone more interested in measuring the exact boundary between “grass” and “gravel” than in showing a shred of judgement or basic courtesy.
If this is the standard of customer service, perhaps the National Trust should spend a little less time policing dogs that are doing absolutely nothing, and a little more time reminding volunteers that rules are supposed to serve people—not the other way round.

如果这就是他们的客户服务标准，那么国民信托或许应该少花点时间去管那些什么也没做、只是待在家里的狗，多花点时间提醒志愿者，规则是为了服务于人，而不是反过来。
