Afternoon tea disappointment
Review of Burgh Island Hotel
Reviewed 1 week ago.
I think I put this on an old Burgh Island Tripadvisor site, so am repeating here for 2026 reviews.
2 friends and i have long wanted to visit Burgh Island Hotel, but as we can't afford to stay there we arranged a short break nearby SPECIFICALLY to go to Burgh Island Hotel, and booked afternoon tea for 14th September 2026. We booked last DECEMBER! For the Nettleford resaurant.
On arrival we were told that there was a party from the Agatha Christie Festival occupying all the Nettleford room so we would be in the Palm Court. The environment was lovely, as you would expect, but sitting in easy chairs round a VERY small low table made it hard to manage all the plates and stuff consistent with afternoon tea. You really need a proper table, as we thought we had booked. In addition the service was incredibly slow, due I'm sure to the 35 odd Agatha Christy group needing to be served. For example, warm scones arrived a good 15 minutes before the rest of the tea, so they wern't warm any more, and we had to remind them, after a long wait, for a teapot refill.
There were two options the hotel could have employed: a) If they had notified me as soon as they knew the group would be occupying the Nettleford, (which I'm sure was well AFTER we had booked our tea last year) we could have had the option of having our tea in the Nettleford the next day instead, as we were in Devon for three nights, but we were not told till we arrived. or b) The larger restaurant was completely empty all afternoon, so the Agatha Christie group could have been put in there so that we, and maybe others, could have been in the Nettleford as booked and enjoyed our tea in comfort.
The building and the staff were lovely and without this poor management of bookings this would have been a 5 star review, but as it is I felt we were marginalised in favour of a large lucrative group who probably booked after we did. Suggest the managment have a look at this and the implications for other customers, and consider whether having a large goup is such a good idea. I wonder how people who were actually staying there felt about it?
Have done a written complaint to Burgh Island direct but no response.
