A fabulous snapshot in time revealed by an engaging expert

点评：We joined Oliver from Dinosaur Expeditions for a fossil-hunting trip along the beach at Brook Chine on a breezy evening in April. At £25 for my family and I, we were expecting a pleasant 2 hour walk during which we would pick up a few tips on what to look for. This was indeed the case, but with so much more. Oliver, our guide, met us in the carpark where he explained where we would be going and what to look for, bringing examples from his pockets to circulate amongst us in a slickly choreographed talk that quickly brought the group of about 20 of us up to speed.
Down on the beach we put our newly acquired skills to the test, quickly finding examples of fossilised wood and shelly limestone. One of our party was even eagle-eyed enough to spot a small fragment of dinosaur bone amongst the gravel. Oliver tried to manage our expectations by telling us this was an extremely rare find.
The walk continued to a spot where our guide paused to tell us about the geology in the cliffs. A muddy estuary some 120 million years ago (if I remember correctly!) was subject to a flash flood during which the imprints of dinosaur footprints were in-filled with sediment which hardened over time into rock. As the sea erodes the cliff, these casts fall into the beach. At this point Oliver tapped a nearby rock with his stick. It had three points to it and I realised with amazement that it was one of the footprints we'd been told about. Further rocks were identified as being from several different species as Oliver painted a scene of predator and prey captured in a snapshot of time by the flash flood.
It was a magical evening, far exceeding my expectations. My young family (9 & 12) were both engaged with the activity, finding fossils and asking questions, which Oliver answered with an inspiring authority.
This trip alone would have made our holiday on the island special and I cannot commend this company highly enough.
