点评：The California Route 66 Museum in Victorville is a fun stop along the famed Mother Road.
The roughly 4,500-square-foot museum offers an eclectic collection of memorabilia mostly from the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s. Local heroes Roy Rogers and triple jet ace Capt. Joseph McConnell are also featured.
The museum displays some vintage neon signs, a nice collection of model classic cars and authentic signs that once proclaimed the site of Miles Mahan’s roadside attraction along Route 66 in Victorville.
Perhaps the most popular feature is a 1960s VW van painted up with flowers, peace signs and other hippie decor. Visitors are welcome to climb inside for a photo op.
While the museum is jam-packed with memorabilia, it doesn’t do a good job explaining the historical significance of Route 66. It was the first continuous federal highway linking Chicago to Los Angeles and fueling the rise of American car culture, migration, and roadside commerce. Established in 1926, the 2,400-mile highway intentionally threaded through small rural towns rather than just major cities, helping farm communities move goods to market. It spawned modern roadside architecture, independent motels, diners, neon signs, and the early fast-food industry before being bypassed by the interstate system in the mid-1950s.
Admission is free. Donations are welcome and the museum has a nice souvenir shop.
