点评:Despite the evocative name, St Martin in the Fields is nowhere near a meadow or field. It’s in central London, opposite famous Trafalgar Square.
This wasn’t always the case and when it was first built in 1222, it was out in the sticks, surrounded by open farmland.
The church has been rebuilt more than once. What you see here today was built in 1726. It has a striking Roman temple-like facade with imposing Georgian architecture. It’s most impressive from the outside and inside, it is much simpler, plain even.
Most tourists will find themselves at Trafalgar Square sooner or later and when you do, it’s easy to cross the road to have a quick look at the church.
TIP:
They often have free lunchtime concerts here. I’ve checked their website a few times to see if one is on when we’re there but I’ve not yet got lucky. If you are there at the right time, it would be well worth popping in.
