点评:I bought the dual ticket for Leighton and Sambourne House (£22), both are fascinating and well worth a visit. In contrast to the showy bling of Leighton, Sambourne was very much a family home, occupied for much of their lives by Punch magazine illustrator Linley Sambourne and his wife. The big appeal of Sambourne House is that the interiors were well maintained by Linley’s descendants, such that they remain pretty much as the couple left them in the early 1900’s. The property reflects the contemporary ‘aesthetic’ style of the period, a fine example of a middle class, terraced family dwelling, with accommodation for servants, and also functioning as a workplace for Linley. The unusual marble bath doubled up as a facility to develop his photographs!
Linley was the maternal great-grandfather of Antony Armstrong-Jones (also a photographer), who married Princess Margaret. On becoming the Earl of Snowdon, the subsidiary title of Viscount Linley was chosen in honour of his great-grandpa. The title continues with Armstrong-Jones’ son, furniture designer, David Linley, a patron of Sambourne House,
As with Leighton House, last entry is at 430pm, but note that whilst Leighton closes on Tuesdays, Sambourne closes Mondays and Tuesdays. The properties are approximately 9 minutes walk apart.
