点评:We were in Alexandria and found that we were rather bored. It has a lot of great restaurants and shopping but we didn't quite get the historical experience we were hoping for. My husband said "you want to go to the US Army Museum"? The answer was no, but I didn't have any better suggestions so we drove about 20 minutes to Fort Belvoir. GPS can be a problem and freeways around DC are no joke so do follow the advice on the website. Wow, was I blown away. My Army veteran father died two years ago and all I kept saying "I wish he could have seen this". It was built in 2020 and it is clean and well maintained. From the minute you walk in you are greeted with columns that tell stories of veterans going all the way to the founders. I read every one and it took me 45 minutes. They were so fascinating. Each gallery is full of history, memorabilia, films and reflections. I consider myself well read on history and I learned some new things.
There is a film in the auditorium every 30 minutes that was very moving. There are three floors but in 4 hours we only were able to do the first floor and even that I felt I was rushing through. The volunteer docents were fantastic. Very knowledgeable and wanting to share that knowledge. The museum was free. Plenty of parking but also a lot of visitors. A small cafeteria which struggled to handle the number of guests. A large gift shop with great products. It reminded me of the Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, Texas. A museum you MUST visit if you are within 100 miles and which you will struggle to fully see in a single visit.
We are planning a return visit in August. Highly recommend!
