点评:It's quite a surreal experience walking through the very urban industrial landscape from Aston Station to Aston Hall - a big road, industrial units, and a football ground just across the road - but stepping through the door you are transported back to the 17th century in this beautifully restored Jacobean house. The history of the Holte family is at the centre of the presentation, from the builder of the hall, Thomas Holte, through subsequent generations of baronets and residents. Some of the rooms are set up as dining rooms, bedrooms, dressing rooms etc so you can imagine how the residents lived. Other rooms contain exhibits relating to the civil war (when the house was attacked by parliamentarians), 18th century fashions, and the visit of Queen Victoria when she opened the hall as a public museum in 1858. The long gallery is the most impressive room, with original 17th century panelling and plasterwork, and I loved the kitchen too. I was surprised how quiet it was on a Saturday morning over a Bank Holiday weekend - there were only a handful of other visitors in the two hours I spent there which is a shame and perhaps explains why there is no cafe or shop, if it wouldn't be profitable for them. Very easy to get to - only 10 minutes on a train from Birmingham New Street and about a 10 minute walk. £10 entry for adults.
