点评:Clovelly is quite unique because the whole village is privately owned. First gifted to Matilda, wife of William the Conqueror in the the 13th century, it’s only ever been owned by three families.
What this means for the tourist is that you have to pay to visit the village. You leave your car outside the Visitor Centre and enter through here.
I’d never come across this before. It struck us as strange to be paying to go into a village and at first we thought the £9.90 entry fee seemed quite a lot. However it was well worth it. We had a lovely day and I cant begrudge paying. The fee includes parking as well as entry to the Fisherman’s Cottage, Kingsley’s house and the separate site of Clovelly Court Gardens. You’d pay almost as much just to park in some places.
The Visitor Centre itself doesn’t have much to offer. Its a large, two-level building with a gift shop and a small fudge but we didn’t linger at either of these. The main attraction is a short video on the history of the town which would have been good but it wasn’t working the day we went. An interesting feature is the traditional picarooner boat, hanging from the ceiling. These little boats have a long history on the Devon coastline. They were used to catch the shoals of herring which were plentiful off Clovelly in the winter season.
Basically, we just walked through the centre to access the the village pretty.
Our first stop as soon as we left the centre was to head to the donkey stalls and visit the much-loved Clovelly donkeys - Alfred, Bert, Ernie and Rex.
