点评：This section of Hadrian’s Wall is close to The Roman Army Museum and it was after a visit there that we drove over onto a single track road signposted for Walltown Crags. There are not many passing places on this stretch and thankfully we didn’t meet any vehicles coming in the opposite direction. There is a lay-by a mile or so along the road which can take a few cars and from there we crossed a field uphill to Walltown Turret 45a. This was our grandchildren's first sight of Hadrian’s Wall and although there are only remnants of the turret and wall remaining it’s a good vantage point to see a section of wall alongside the crags which the Romans integrated as part of their fortifications.
This is open countryside with sheep roaming so mind your step. You can keep walking in either direction to follow the wall however we only went towards the right for a few hundred yards and then returned cross-country back to the lay-by and then retraced the route in the car back to the Museum.
An alternative parking option in the area is Northumberland National Park pay & display at Walltown Quarry which costs £3 for one hour minimum - cash likely required. If venturing to different sections of the Wall it may be cost effective to obtain a Day Pass for parking which costs £10 - see NNP website for details - then you don't need to watch the clock and use the machines at every stop.
