点评:This is a highly engaging and informative museum that brings to life the development of steel and the people who shaped it, from master craftsmen through to large-scale industrial production. It tells the story of making in the city exceptionally well, charting Sheffield’s journey through the Industrial Revolution, the Victorian era, and into the modern age.
The exhibits are immersive and thoughtfully curated, allowing visitors to experience both the working lives and home lives of those who lived through these periods. Highlights include the celebration of the Women of Steel, which adds important social context, and the way the museum captures the sights and sounds of industrial progress.
Standout areas include the Transport Galleries, where the pioneering Sheffield Simplex cars are on display, the atmospheric Little Mesters Street with its cobbled walkway, and the impressive Hawley Tool Collection, which chronicles centuries of skilled craftsmanship and precision manufacturing. The 1916 House also provides a fascinating insight into life on the home front during the First World War.
The museum is also supported by a lively and welcoming café, which offers an all-day breakfast alongside a good selection of drinks and cakes, making it an ideal place to pause and reflect during a visit.
Unfortunately, the River Don Engine was not operational on the day of my visit; however, simply seeing its sheer size and scale was impressive in itself and still very much worth the time. Overall, this is an excellent museum that successfully combines industrial heritage with human stories, making it both educational and enjoyable.
