One of the Main Sights on our Walking Tour of Bath

点评：The Circus, along with the Royal Crescent, was one of the main sights on our walking tour of Bath.
What you see here is a series of Georgian terraces built in three majestic sweeping curves around a central, circular park.
You can't go inside them so this is just a quick stop but it really does look quite wonderful and the curved lines make great photos.
Designed by John Wood the Elder and completed by his son, they were built between 1754 and 1768. There are 30 townhouses in total but the houses are not all as they seem. They appear to be identical, but behind the elegant facade, they are a clutter of different roof heights and design. Wood had designed a beautiful and formal frontage but the plots behind were sold to a range of different builders, who could do what they liked at the rear.
It was tempting to imagine Jane Austen here but this was a little beyond their price range. Instead she stayed with her family at nearby 25 Gay Street and also at Queen Square. As their fortunes fell, they stayed in the even less salubrious Trim St.
Many other famous figures stayed or lived here. The painter, Thomas Gainsborough was at #17, the African explorer, David Livingstone lived at #13 and the actor Nicholas Cage lived here more recently. Curious to. Know what it would cost today, we looked up the prices and they seem to be around the £450 - £5 million price mark.
The Circus is a little way out of town but if you join one of the walking tours, it will definitely be included. Just a short distance away (maybe 5 minutes) is the Royal Crescent. it is very easy to see both at the same time.
