点评：I became aware of the Colony Tour while in staying in Doogort over Easter 2025. Having spent many holidays in Achill in the past 3 years, I read a little about the history of Achill and decided the Colony Tour was a must. So July 2026 presented the opportunity.
Kevin Toolis presented a most interesting and informative account of the history of the Colony and its mastermind, Edward Nangle, set in the context of Irish and British political and social history of the C18th and C19th. The desolation of Connaught caused by the Cromwellian and other plantations by English and Scottish settlers and the various potato famines of the 1830s and 40s, the remote island of Achill and its Catholic population provided an opportunity for the failed clergyman Edward Nangle to form a Protestant colony there. Kevin revealed in dramatic fashion how the Catholic archbishop of Tuam and Killala, John Mc Hale, during the Great Hunger of 1947/48 and thereafter, put a halt to his gallop and prevented Achill from becoming a Protestant island. This proselytising experiment caused a rift among the population of Achill which was remembered by the local people, even until the late C20th.
Kevin brings the history of the Achill and the Colony to life during an enthralling 2 hour tour of the Colony in Doogort. I would recommend it to anyone visiting Achill. Do not miss it!
