点评:Our experience was different from others who have posted here.
After the 2017 Eclipse -- where we weren't able to find a room within 4 hours of our viewing site, we decided to try a tour. Based on what we expected to have to pay for hotels alone, Astro Trails looked like a good deal. However, it's very much a case of reading their website, and managing expectations.
We were on the Texas Trip. The price was great considering what other eclipse tours charge and it was a case of "you get what you pay for". I don't mean that in a bad way. We had a few days in San Antonio before hand. Hotel was nice -- say 3* in a very convenient location. Breakfast was 'basic', about what you'd expect at that level of hotel. If you wanted more, there were plenty of restaurants nearby.
Similar for us in Waco. We were at an "Aloft", which is one of Marriott's budget lines.
There were problems with the check in at the hotel as the Hotel wasn't prepared for 150 or so to check in simultaneously. This probably could have been alleviated if they sent someone ahead to be there way before we arrived. I had other issues with the Aloft itself (see my review on this site), but really none of this was Astro Trails fault. The hotel was what it was -- 3* simple and convenient.
That being said, others in Waco were in a Red Roof Inn -- we heard complaints from those staying there. I don't know whether it was because they were expecting a better quality hotel, or whether this hotel was below Red Roof's standards. What appears to have happened, was that they expanded the trip as they found hotel availability. Those who booked first got better rooms.
Overall, considering my experience in 2017 and what hotels were going for along the eclipse path -- I think that it Astro Trails provided good value.
For the eclipse itself, they found a horse farm 20 minutes out of town. It was spacious, and there was plenty of room to set up equipment. However, it was simple. Bails of hay and porta potties. There was some food sold at the location, but not a lot. We were aware of this, and purchased crackers and peanut butter in San Antonio before we left. We brought water bottles, and were fine.
If one wanted more comforts -- one could have stayed at the hotel (which was also in the path of totality) or gone to one of the parks in Waco. We were considering this when it looked like there might be thunder storms on eclipse day (fortunately, the weather cleared up). There would have been better facilities and more food options, but it wouldn't have been as charming.
Complaints -- there were a few.
The busses they had to take us from San Antonio to Waco (and back) were .... well past their prime -- on the trip back (severe storms), they leaked. Chalk it up to this being a budget operation.
My biggest complaint -- and this is really minor -- there was a free major town party in Waco, within walking distance of the hotel. Big name country music, drone show, etc We found it by accident, but most of the group did not -- they could have done a bit of research and told everyone
My second biggest complaint --there was an astronomer there, who gave one lecture. The lecture was pretty basic. On eclipse day, the astronomer went off by himself to do his own thing on eclipse day -- was nowhere to be found.
Highlight of the Tour
I'd say the highlight was the other people -- I'd say about 75% had seen eclipses before. Most of the people were eclipse junkies, all were in the spirit of things and the possibility that we'd get clouded out didn't dampen spirits. Also, the experience of the guests made up for the lack of expertise provided by Astro Trails. You could get info on photography, general astronomy, etc.
Overall
It's a budget tour. It's considerably less expensive than other alternatives. It will save you a lot of time in finding hotels, and given the demand for rooms, I don't think I could have done better on my own, price-wise. If you want luxury -- don't book them. If you want a decent, comfortable room at a good price, and they make all the arrangements, I'd give them a go.
However, I'm not positive I'd sign up in some place like Egypt, Tunisia or Morocco (2027) where if things go wrong, you're stuck.
For 2026 -- Personally, I found Cunard's pricing to be fantastic, and IMO is likely a better value. Also, more things to do (especially considering it's a short eclipse). We're booked on the two-week Trieste-Barcelona cruise.
